I want to thank Michael Madany and Amy Thurow for providing hard copies of many of the documents, Mary Barkworth for general assistance, and Jon Herlocker for crucial financial and technical support.
This post presents documents relevant to more than one part (North, Center, South) of Somalia as it was in 1989. Some may also apply to rangelands in eastern Ethiopia and northeastern Kenya.

Desmond Mahony’s Trees of Somalia, and its Somali translation by Ibrahim, include information ranging from descriptions of 94 tree species to their range, climatic requirements, uses and methods of propagation,
The British Forestry Project studied charcoal production in southern Somalia (Trump 1986; Bird & Shepherd 1988). However, this industry is also important elsewhere as witnessed by these charcoal-laden trucks in Central Somalia.

Livestock keeping by pastoralists is the most widespread production system in Somalia. Thus, the relevance of A Range Management Handbook for Somalia (Field 1981).
